The Rose of Sharon is a small tree with big conspicuous late summer flowers. Flowers are usually white, sometimes blue, purple or red. This ornamental shrub's blossoms attract hummingbirds. Vase-shaped with vertical branches and light gray bark. A good specimen tree or can be used as a formal or informal hedge. Native to China and India.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Rose of Sharon has a moderate growth rate. It grows up to 24 feet in height and 5 to 10 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 5 to 9. Prefers full sun or light shade and moist, well-drained soil containing organic matter like compost. Urban tolerance.
